JONAS BROTHERS
I WATCHED THE GRAMMY'S LAST NIGHT AND IT WAS PRETTY AMAZING TO SEE YOU THERE, THIS YOUNG GROUP, SINGING WITH AMAZING LEGENDARY STEVIE WONDER. HOW WAS IT FOR YOU?
NICK: Although it was a little upsetting not to win 'Best New Artest', I think the win for us was performing Stevie. And being able to perform with one of idols. And it really was an amazing experience. And we're truly honored.
HOW YOU FEEL WHEN YOU SEE ALL THOSE GIRLS SCREAMING? MAYBE EACH OF YOU HAVE A DIFFERENT STORY?
KEVIN: The huge moment for us is actually in the film. When we got to go to Times Square for album releasing for our album, "A Little Bit Longer". We showed up and we made an announcement four hours prior, that we were going to be going to Times Square to buy the album. We did not expect that kind of response. And to see the over whelming response from our fans was amazing. And you see our reactions. Li;e, I'm jumping up and down, because I can't control the joy. It was just amazing.
JOE: My favorite part of the experience of doing this movie was... definitely being able to share with people what we see every day. Mean, we get to see some amazing things. From... every point when we wake up in the morning until we go to sleep. Every day is somthing different. And it's really exciting that you get to see it from our eyes. Because the cameras are usually right bahind us or with us and you can see, the fans reacting and the craziness of it all.
HOW ARE YOU GOING TO STAY GROUNDED AND NOT GO CRAZY WITH YOUR LIFE OR FAME?
JOE: We kind of live by a group rule; that we say to each other, "live at the bottom even if you're at the top." And it's something that our parent's have kind of told us from the beginning and we tell each other every day. We try to remind each other that this is a blessing and we're living so many people's dreams. And we just get the opportunty to live it out every day.
WHAT'S THE MOST INFLUENTIAL SONG IN YOUR LIFE AT THIS POINT AND WHY?
KEVIN: Wow... I think I would just have to go with the immediate from last night, which was "Superstition" I think that will be a memory in m own personal life that I will cherish and remember forever. NICK: I think for me, " I Don't Want To Go Chesea" by Elvis Costello, has to be one of mine. JOE: Probably "Living For The City" by Stevie Wonder.
YOUR FATHER PLAYED A BIG, BIG INFLUENCE IN YOUR CAREER. AND PEOPLE DON'T KNOW. CAN YOU TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT IT?
KEVIN: Our dad is an amazing man. We've been raised in an amazing home. An amazing journey from nothing to where we've been blessed with today. The opportunities we've received (are) incredible. And because of the advice that he's given and thecritiques that he shared. He would never lie to us.
ACCORDING TO YOUR GUARD, THE GIRLS HAVE VERY CLEVER WAYS OF TRYING TO ENTER YOUR HOTEL ROOMS. CAN YOU TELL US SOME OF THE INTERESTING THINGS THAT YOU'VE EXPERIENCED, ABOUT GIRLS TRYING TO ENTER YOUR ROOM IN VARIOUS GUISES?
JOE: Some interesting stories, I would say we've had run on the highway, just to chase our bus. We've had girls try to pretend like they work at the concert venue. We've had girls try to climb barbwire fences. We made them stop, though. (There have been) some crazy experiences but thankfully no one's been hurt. We've been able to come up with some great stories. I think the most memorable is when we were at dinner with our mother and a lady went to the front desk reception and said: "Hi I'm here. I want to surprise my boys, The Jonas Brothers. They're inside, I'm thier mother."
IN THE PRODUCTION NOTES KEVIN WAS DESCRIBED AS FUN, JOE A COMIC AND NICK A LEADER. CAN YOU ELABORATE ON THE DESCRIPTIONS OF YOURSELVES?
KEVIN: It's easier to describe someone else, rather than yourself. But I'll start with Nick. People do call him, Mr. President for a reason. We hope he runs in 2038, so we hope for your vote. But he's a leader. Even at age, he carries himself in a way and you might say, soft spoken, but he chooses his words carefully. Um, Jeo is a very funny guy. He always knows how to get a rise out of somebody and he won't stop until he does. But he has a sensitive heart. And people sometimes forget because he can make them laugh so much. And it's a good quality that he has. JOE: Thank you... Kevin.. We call Kevin The Mayor. Because he's always the first one to, like, shake hands and kiss the babies head. But ah, he's businessman when he has to. He's always come up with the great ideas for touring and things like that.
HOW'S TO DO SOMETHING POSITIVE FOR THE YOUNG PEOPLE?
KEVIN: I think we've always been interested in being entertainers, at the end of the day. And we've been raised in a home that's all about family. So it's very important to us to bring a good message of fun and excitement. JOE: I think for me... I 've imagined that we would be in a band. But I never thought... Honestly, I never thought it would be with my brothers. And once we started loving it and doing it together, we kind of had these ideas of these amazing tours that we could put together, we've tried to make the audience smile and leave them happy.
HOW IS IT TO WORK CLOSELY TOGETHER? DO YOU EVER FIGHT?
KEVIN: Yeah.. People ask us all the time if we fight. We just don't have time. Actually we have a different respect level for each other because we do work so closely together. And this band is a dwmocracy. If there is somthing we might not agree on, we vote. And if it's a two to one vote, we will go with- KEVIN: And I lose. It's always me in (the minority)... No, I'm kidding. But we really will go with the two. Because we appreciate... We know that many risks have been taken in our family to make this possible for us. Two years ago, we were living in a home with all four boys, there's our younger brother, Frankie, lilving in one bedroom. And so our life has taken us to amazing places. From that moment to last night where we were on stage at the Grammy's performing with Stevie Wonder, you take every single moment for what it is and never forget. I think as brothers and as a family, we will cherish those moments.
WHAT ABOUT THE TV SHOW, THAT COMING UP SOON?
JOE: We've been filming since the middle of September. And it's a little different for us, because we're so used to playing concerts at night. And when you have to work from seven until six every day, its just... You never see the sun and it's kind of weird for you. And, you kind of feel like a normal person. It's really fun. And we're having a good time doing it. The cast is really great. And it's for Disney Channel. And the show is like a fictional story about us. It's a brothers Band living in a firehouse, and trying to deal with going on tour but also going to school and relationships and normal things teenagers our age would go through, but they have to make deadlines for a concert tour, or things like that. So it's a really great concept and fun. And the writers are really great. Um... And they're coming up with great scripts and they're funny, we're having a great time doing it. It's going to be coming out in May. JOE: ..we're filming 21 episodes and (right now) we're on 18. So we're close to being finished.
AND IT'S AIRING ALL OVER THE WORLD, ISN'T IT?
KEVIN: Hopefully.
TO LOOK BACK YOU WERE INITIALLY SIGNED TO COLUMBIA RECORDS, AND THEY DROPPED YOU. HOW DID THAT WORK?
NICK: For us really was a good thing to be dropped by Columbia. As funny as that sounds. Because it really helped us grow as musicians and artists. We found our home at Hollywood Records. And brought in 15 demos that we had recorded. They said, this is your record, go and record it. And that was our first record we did on Hollywood, called, "Jonas Brothers" self-titled album.
HOW DID YOU FIRST GET SIGNED TO COLUMBIA? HOW OLD WERE YOU AND HOW THAT HAPPEN?
NICK: It actually started out as a solo project with me first. I had just come out of doing some Broadway shows. I recorded a song and someone heard it there and wanted to sign me. And I started working on a solo record and wrote a song for it when I was about 11. They heard it, the label, and wanted to sign all three of us. And so it became a group project. And we started touring and recording and... later on, got dropped (laughs)...
WHAT KIND OF PLANS DO YOU HAVE FOR LATER ON?
NICK: I think we all have our owm individual dreams along with our dreams as The Jonas Brothers. But we're really getting into producing and writing for other artists. We've worked with Demi Lovato, our co-star in the movie called "CAMP ROCK". And we're working on another band right now called 'Honor Society'. So, doing some more of that. Recording more music on our own, doing some more touring. I hope one day have a degree.
HOW DO YOU HANDLE THE INCREDIBLE ATTENTION AND THE MOVE AWAY FROM THE WHITE-HOT ATTENTION LATER ON?
NICK: I think for us, it was always a personal decision. We hope to continue to keep it that. We're more about just values and standards. It's not so much us judging anything, you know, we're not perfect. Nobody's perfect. We're just trying to do our best. JOE: ..and the transition, you take every day, step by step. When we wrote a song called 'Burning Up' a year and a half ago, I never thought we'd be performing it on the Grammy's. It's been an amazing journey. KEVIN: I think it's also about really stopping and appreciating it all. I mean, yesterday we told each other when we were on that stage, on the Grammy stage, take a second and look out in the crowd and realized, we're playing for Paul McCartney! Like, it's ridiculous. You can't balieve it. You have to really learn how to enjoy it and know that this is a blessing and you're living so many people's dreams out there, everyone writes their own story... why not make it great?
HAVE YOU EVER WONDERED WHY THE GIRLS ARE SO CRAZY ABOUT YOU? WHAT IS THE EXPLANATION?
KEVIN: ...we wonder that every day. (laughs) But we don't mind it either but I think for us... We got lucky with the response. In this film, we kind of poke fun at it sometimes at the very end, you know, with the opening the door and then they're all there, just right in front of the door. We appreciate it because we know that without them. We wouldn't have had a home to go to. For a band that really was (new) we tried anything we could. They wanted to come. We just wanted to facilitate a way for us to play music. We went into schools where there's no way they wanted to be at a rock and roll show at 8AM. We played the venues.
WITH GIRLS SCREAMING ABOUT YOU ARE YOU GOING TI HNCORPORATE Human Causes THAT IN THE MUSIC?
NICK: I think we try to incorporate things about being a gentleman in our lyrics. Our mom raised us to have good manners and she always said, "I'm raising you to eat at the White House." And we have now. And so it's amazing. And I that we're continuing to learn. We're young men and we're going to learn a lot more in our lives. And we're excited for the journey. KEVIN: A very special song in this movie is the 'Love Is On Its Way' song which is specific to this movie. That song we actually wrote with our father. And it was a great song. We wrote it, but we knew it wasn't right for our album becouse it was meant for something different. And we thought, this movie is ths right place for it. JOE: ... and we know that right now in this world so many people need hope. And something to smile about. that's kind of our whole deal, that we can hopefully be a positive light in dark timas.
